James 1:19: “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry” (NIV)
Do we listen before we judge?
It would be extremely difficult to be judgmental when you’re trying to listen to someone while being compassionate, honest, sincere, and fair.
The Pharisees tried to judge Jesus without letting him have a say or explain himself. They had no interest in hearing his side of the story. Thankfully, perhaps the only brave Pharisee, Nicodemus, spoke up and said, “According to our Law we cannot condemn people before hearing them out and finding out what they have done.” (John 7:51 GNT).
Wise words indeed.
Be honest with yourself. How many times have you judged someone—your child, your spouse, your neighbor, your enemy—without listening to their side of the story first? Have you found yourself treating someone the same way the Pharisees treated Jesus?
When you feel the urge to judge someone, stop and take a long, deep breath. Hold that breath if that’s what it takes for you to listen before you speak! If you don’t listen first, you are committing the sin of judging others.
Now, what if you earnestly believe that something needs to come to light in someone’s life? What if you try to LOVINGLY confront them about it? (If you're not solely driven by LOVE, God hasn't called YOU to do it!) Even then, you should try to LOVINGLY Nudge and not Judge! And most importantly, talk only to God about it!
Whatever it is, it's not yours to expose UNLESS it is hurting or endangering someone. If that's not the case, Ask and then trust God to take care of it. Your job is to listen first. Try to understand before judging someone’s struggle.
Jesus said, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (Matthew 7:1-2 NIV).
Do to others as you would have them do to you. Listen in love, compassion, honesty, sincerity and fairness. Then let God be the judge. He is the only One with the capacity and wisdom.
May the Love and light of God's goodness shine in your lives always! 💡
Lord please help us LISTEN to others with compassion ❤️🩹🙏🏽
