Today's corrective-vision Devotional, submitted by Brendan Sierra, will adjust and correct the lenses through which we are viewing what's going on in the world around us. 👓 Thank you, Brendan, for taking on the temporary role of optometrist in order to fix our focus on God's Word! We ALL need to see it better! 🤓
Although the year hasn’t quite ended yet and there’s still quite a number of weeks left, I reflect back on what’s happened throughout the year. While some may claim that it’s been one of the worst years, I can’t help but be thankful. In fact, Romans 1:20 puts it into words that I can’t, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities- his eternal power and divine nature- have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”
I don’t know what everyone may be experiencing, I don’t know the tragedies people may have gone through this year, the pain, or the memories they were able to create despite what’s been going on. What I do know is Romans 1:20. When I see this verse, I can’t help but think of all the blessings and goodness God has shown me through the year. A lot of times we just look at the big picture and judge it without thought, instead of looking at the details that matter. In other words, although we may have a terrible day, we can forget that in just that day, we have had blessings since the beginning of the day- the ability to wake up, the ability to walk, the ability to go to our kitchen and not have to worry that our fridge or pantry won’t have any food. The ability to wake up underneath a roof above us and walls around us.
Just the other day I was at work and I noticed a family of four, three kids and a dad. As the dad is playing with his young kids on the trampoline, I can see how much excitement is in him as he tries dunking a basketball in one of our hoops. Of course, I didn’t think much of it because he seemed like an ordinary man. He turns to me and he tells me how he never thought he’d be able to do something so simple. And as I question what he means in my head, he tells me how he had an accident a while back. Two broken legs, a fractured hip, a fractured spine, and so much more damage on his body from an accident. Despite the very thin odds of walking again, this man was a walking miracle.
It reminded me of the story of Job where one day you can have everything, and the very next, nothing. Through his story, we learn that Job never goes against God, but instead gives him praise. What Romans 1:20 is telling us is that since the very beginning, we see God’s work being done. His eternal power and divine nature is seen each and every day. No matter how bad things may seem, God did not put His work on pause. He has not abandoned us. God has loved us from the beginning and He loves us now. Hebrews 13:8 tells us just that, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
So as we finish the year, know that tragedies will continue and there will be bad days, but do not worry, for God is with us. He allows the bad days to happen for a reason. We may not know the reason, but we do know He has a plan for us, and His invisible qualities will be visible to us. He is with us.
